Crowns and Bridges

What is a Crown?

A crown, sometimes known as a "cap", is a type of dental restoration which completely covers a tooth. It fits over the remaining part of your own tooth, making it look just like a real tooth again, and adding strength to teeth that have been broken or that have been weakened by decay.

What is a Bridge?

Bridges are ideal for people only have one or two teeth missing and who do not want to wear a denture, and do not want the expense of an implant.

A bridge basically involves sticking a replacement tooth onto the tooth next-door! They can be made by crowning the teeth on either side of the gap and attaching a false tooth in the middle. Or by hanging the false tooth from a "wing" that goes along the back of the adjacent tooth. Not everyone is suitable for a bridge, but your suitability for a bridge can be discussed at your consultation with your dentist.

What are crowns and bridges made from?

These types of restoration are usually made by a laboratory from porcelain. This gives maximum strength and fantastic cosmetic results! There are other options available that may be suitable in certain cases, which your dentist can explain at your consultation.

Why would I need a crown or bridge?

Crowns are an ideal restoration for teeth that have been broken, have been weakened by decay or a have very large filling. Bridges are to fill a space, for people who only have one or two teeth missing, who do not want to wear a denture, and do not want the expense of an implant.

I already have crowns but I hate how they look!

Older crowns and NHS crowns often have a metal core, so they look very dark/flat in colour, and often have a black line visible where the tooth meets the gum. We use crowns which are entirely made of porcelain - they are just as strong, but they look JUST like your own teeth. So whether you need a crown, or want to replace your old crowns - we can help you!

How do I care for my crown or bridge?

How long your crown or bridge lasts depends on how well you look after it.The crown or bridge itself is made of porcelain, so cannot get decay, however you can get decay where the tooth meets the crown/bridge, if you are not keeping it extremely clean. Therefore, it is important to keep this area just as clean as you would your natural teeth (or maybe cleaner!) in order to prevent decay and gum disease affecting the crown or bridge.

Will my crown/bridge be noticeable ?

No. The crown or bridge will be made to match your other teeth. The shade of the neighbouring teeth will be recorded, to make sure that the colour looks natural and matches the surrounding teeth. You may also wish to compliment your crown/bridge treatment with whitening to achieve a brighter smile.
